What is a Pre-Emergent?

A pre-emergent herbicide prevents weeds by stopping weed seeds from germinating. It creates a protective layer in the soil that kills seeds before they can grow into viable plants.

When Should You Apply Pre-Emergent?

To effectively control weeds, apply pre-emergent at these key times:

  • Early February: To prevent spring weeds.
  • May 1st: To stop summer weeds.
  • September 1st: To block fall and winter weeds.

Choosing the Right Product:

  • Dimension 'Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper': This product targets grassy weeds like Annual Bluegrass and Ryegrass.
  • Gallery: This product focuses on broadleaf weeds such as Dandelions, Clovers, and Chickweed.

For complete weed control, apply each product in separate passes. Do not mix them together.

When Not to Apply:

  • Avoid using pre-emergent if you plan to overseed with Ryegrass or sow Wildflower Seeds.
  • Do not use it on new lawns.

Additional Tips:

After applying pre-emergent, we recommend using Twin Oaks 21-0-14 fertilizer for a healthier lawn. For more details on lawn care, check out our 7-step lawn care program or consult with one of our garden coaches.
