Planting Ornamental Cabbage & Kale This Fall

If you want to add something unique to your fall garden consider planting ornamental cabbage and kale. They bring vibrant color and texture to your planters, garden beds, and borders. You can plant them alone or mix them with other fall favorites like mums, grasses, pansies, or violas.

Care Tips:

  • Sunlight: Cabbage and kale prefer full sun but can handle partial shade. However, too much shade may cause them to become leggy.
  • Temperature: Their color becomes more vivid when temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C).
  • Watering: They need occasional watering when the soil feels dry.

Using Cabbage and Kale in Containers:

  • Standalone: Ornamental cabbage and kale look great by themselves in containers.
  • Mixed Plantings: Use a large cabbage or kale as a centerpiece and surround it with pansies or violas in similar colors. You can also ring a large flowering mum or a decorative pumpkin or gourd with several small cabbages or kale plants. They make excellent fillers around ornamental grasses or evergreen shrubs.

Can You Eat Ornamental Cabbage and Kale?

  • Technically, you can eat ornamental cabbage and kale, but they are very bitter and not meant for eating. For edible options, choose varieties specifically grown for consumption.

Difference Between Cabbage and Kale:

  • Cabbage: Has larger, flat leaves.
  • Kale: Features curlier leaves and tends to hold its color and shape better than cabbage
