DIY Tree Planting Guide

  1. Digging the Hole:
    • Dig a hole that is 1.5 times wider than the root ball.
    • Make sure the top of the root ball is 1-2 inches above the soil level to prevent drowning.
  2. Preparing the Plant:
    • Remove the plant from its container.
    • Check the root ball. Cut or spread any roots that are circling around the container.
  3. Planting:
    • Place your tree in the newly dug hole and ensure the trunk of the plant is straight.
    • Fill the hole with a mix of native soil and amendments. Use Cotton Bur Compost and Bio-Tone Starter Plus. Follow the Bio-Tone instructions carefully.
  4. Watering:
    • Water the plant thoroughly until the soil is saturated.
    • Tamp the soil firmly to remove any air pockets.
  5. Mulching:
    • Apply mulch around the plant to a depth of 2-3 inches.
    • Keep the mulch 6 inches away from the trunk to prevent bugs from damaging it.
  6. Watering Frequency:
    • Winter: Every 1-2 days
    • Spring & Fall: Every 2-3 days
    • Summer: Every 3+ days
  7. Water Amount:
    • 5 Gallon Plant: 5 gallons
    • 7 Gallon Plant: 7 gallons
    • 10 Gallon Plant: 10 gallons
    • 30 Gallon Plant: 25 gallons
  8. Note:
    • Do not rely on a lawn sprinkler system for watering newly planted trees or shrubs.

This simple guide will help you plant and care for your new trees and shrubs effectively.
