DIY Tree Planting Guide
- Digging the Hole:
- Dig a hole that is 1.5 times wider than the root ball.
- Make sure the top of the root ball is 1-2 inches above the soil level to prevent drowning.
- Preparing the Plant:
- Remove the plant from its container.
- Check the root ball. Cut or spread any roots that are circling around the container.
- Planting:
- Place your tree in the newly dug hole and ensure the trunk of the plant is straight.
- Fill the hole with a mix of native soil and amendments. Use Cotton Bur Compost and Bio-Tone Starter Plus. Follow the Bio-Tone instructions carefully.
- Watering:
- Water the plant thoroughly until the soil is saturated.
- Tamp the soil firmly to remove any air pockets.
- Mulching:
- Apply mulch around the plant to a depth of 2-3 inches.
- Keep the mulch 6 inches away from the trunk to prevent bugs from damaging it.
- Watering Frequency:
- Winter: Every 1-2 days
- Spring & Fall: Every 2-3 days
- Summer: Every 3+ days
- Water Amount:
- 5 Gallon Plant: 5 gallons
- 7 Gallon Plant: 7 gallons
- 10 Gallon Plant: 10 gallons
- 30 Gallon Plant: 25 gallons
- Note:
- Do not rely on a lawn sprinkler system for watering newly planted trees or shrubs.
