Tips for Bringing In Your Houseplants

As the temperatures start to drop, it's time to move your outdoor houseplants indoors. Bringing them inside can be a bit of a process, so here are some essential tips to ensure a smooth transition and keep your indoor space pest-free and healthy.

1. Bring Houseplants In Well Before the First Frost

Tropical plants, in particular, can be sensitive to cooler temperatures. To avoid any potential stress or damage, bring your houseplants indoors well before the first frost hits. Most tropicals don’t handle temperatures in the 40s well, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and get them inside early.

2. Check Plants Thoroughly for Pests

Before bringing your plants indoors, inspect them carefully for pests. Give the foliage a good wash with plain water, making sure to clean both the tops and bottoms of the leaves. This helps remove any unwanted guests like spiders or aphids that could hitch a ride into your home.

3. Use Insecticidal Soap

For an extra layer of protection, treat your plants with an insecticidal soap such as “Espoma” Insecticidal Soap. This ready-to-use product requires no mixing—just spray it directly onto the plant. It’s effective against a variety of pests, including mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. Remember, pests can hide on the undersides of leaves, so be thorough in your application.

4. Clean Pots

Don’t forget to clean the pots your plants come in. Scrub the outside of terra cotta pots with a steel wool pad and use a nylon scouring pad for glazed pots. Dip your chosen pad in a mild soap and water solution to remove dirt, mold, and any hidden insects. This step helps ensure that no unwanted pests or diseases make their way into your home along with your plants.
