Kalanchoe: Vibrant & Long-Lasting Blooms

The kalanchoe is a colorful and low-maintenance houseplant that makes a perfect gift, especially during the holiday season. It brightens up both indoor and outdoor spaces with its vibrant blooms.

Plant Details:

• Origin: Native to Madagascar
• Size: Grows 8-12 inches tall
• Flowers: Small, upright clusters in colors like red, yellow, orange, pink, and white

Growing Conditions:

• Sunlight: Prefers bright light but not direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves. Bright light helps maintain flower color.
• Soil: Needs well-drained soil. Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid soggy soil to prevent root rot. Kalanchoes can handle some drought but avoid letting the soil get too dry.
• Watering: Avoid overwatering. Let the soil dry out between waterings. Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering, while wrinkled leaves suggest underwatering. Reduce watering in winter.
• Temperature: Thrives in temperatures above 55°F. Ideal for containers on patios or side tables.

Fertilizer:

• Use a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks during spring and summer. Avoid over-fertilizing.

Forcing Blooms:

• Post-Bloom Care: Prune back the flower stalk after blooming.
• Winter Blooming: To encourage blooming indoors during winter, control the amount of sunlight. Kalanchoes need about 6 weeks of darkness to bloom.
  • Process:
    1. Determine when you want the plant to bloom (e.g., around Thanksgiving) and count back 6 weeks.
    2. Allow the plant to dry out slightly, then cover it with a cardboard box for at least 14 hours per day. Avoid plastic bags as they can cause rot.
    3. After 6 weeks, expose the plant to bright but indirect sunlight.
